Visit Bergues

No visit to Bergues would be complete without finding out more about the film that is synonymous with the town. The tourist office’s “Ch’ti Tour” will bring a smile to your face as your guide takes you to the locations used in the French film – from the belfry to the famous canal scene and Antoine Bailleul’s house. This 1.5-hour walk is a chance to explore the village, and to discover all the secrets and anecdotes from this popular film.

The Gothic belfry in Bergues is 154 feet high (47 metres) and is a UNESCO-listed building that has recently undergone renovation. As you climb, you’ll come across some of the giants of Bergues – earthy characters from Flemish folklore. The stars of the show after 206 steps, however, are the carillon bells and the unbeatable view over the French Flemish plains.

Le Bruegel, built in 1597, is considered by many to be the first Flemish tavern (estaminet) ever opened. It serves traditional local dishes, including la carbonnade flamande, a local stew simmered in beer and spicy gingerbread. Le Welsh or “Welsh rarebit” – is another popular dish here, inspired by the eponymous Welsh snack made from hot cheese sauce and toasted bread. Whatever the menu, enjoy tasty and sweet-smelling Flemish cuisine in a vibrant and friendly atmosphere. Beer and home-made fries are waiting for you, your family and friends – pure delight!

Bergues is a fortified town – and it will reveal its hidden treasures to you on this walk from the ramparts to the canals. Make your way around the fortifications to emerge into a world of nature that can be extended if you return via the forest en route to the Place du Marché aux Bestiaux. Keen on more of a historical loop? The Circuit des Vieilles Pierres (or Old Stones Circuit) runs for nearly 2 miles (3 kilometres) and is a journey of discovery around the historical buildings that have helped form the foundations of Bergues.
