Fête de la Mer in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

In the welcoming seaside town of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the sea is never far from daily life — and once a year, it takes centre stage. Around 90 minutes by car from Calais, the Fête de la Mer is a moving and joyful celebration rooted in maritime tradition, offering families a meaningful way to connect with local history while enjoying time by the coast.

A festival of memory and togetherness

At the heart of the event is a tribute to the fishermen and seafarers from Le Courtgain, the town’s historic fishing quarter. During the festival, the narrow streets are beautifully decorated with nets and flowers, creating a poignant yet uplifting atmosphere.     Festivities on land and water

    Alongside its ceremonial side, the Fête de la Mer is also a lively, family-friendly occasion. Over two days, the harbour and town come alive with live music, exhibitions and food stalls, while boats gather in the marina, adding colour and movement to the waterfront.

    It’s the perfect excuse to stroll along the quays, breathe in the salty air and settle down in a local bistro to enjoy a generous plate of moules-frites, watching life unfold around the harbour.

    Making the most of the Bay of Somme

    Arriving by car allows visitors to explore more of this exceptional coastline. Nearby highlights include the Parc du Marquenterre, renowned for its birdlife, seal colonies and wild landscapes, and the family-friendly resort of Le Crotoy, with its long sandy beach.

    A ride on the historic steam train, which winds its way through the marshes of the bay, adds a touch of nostalgia and adventure — especially for younger travellers.
