Fête du Flobart in Wissant

Fête du Flobart in Wissant

A seaside tradition to share with the family

On the Opal Coast, traditions are closely tied to the sea. Each year in Wissant, a small seaside village backed by wide beaches and open horizons, one event celebrates a unique part of local maritime heritage: the Fête du Flobart.

Flobarts are traditional wooden fishing boats, specially designed to glide in very shallow water. Wissant is now the last fishing village to keep both the boats and the age-old fishing methods alive — and this lively festival is its way of sharing that story with visitors, young and old.

A joyful introduction to coastal heritage

Designed with families in mind, the Fête du Flobart combines celebration and discovery in equal measure. Throughout the day, the village fills with fishermen’s songs, live music and demonstrations of maritime crafts, offering children a hands-on glimpse into coastal life.

Food stalls and tastings showcase local seafood, while exhibitions help explain how the boats were built and used. The atmosphere is friendly, open and relaxed — perfect for introducing children to French culture in a playful, accessible way.

Horses, boats and the open sea

The highlight of the festival is a procession unlike any other. One by one, the flobarts are pulled through the village towards the shore by Boulonnais horses, a powerful local draft breed. It’s a moment that captivates children and adults alike, as boats, horses and villagers come together before the boats are launched into the sea.

Nature at its most spectacular

Wissant’s setting adds another dimension to the experience. The village lies at the foot of Cap Blanc-Nez, part of the protected Deux Caps nature reserve, known for its dramatic clifftop walks and sweeping views across the Channel. On a clear day, the English coastline feels tantalisingly close — and with a bit of luck, you may even spot grey seals along the shore.

A gentle, authentic and deeply local celebration, the Fête du Flobart is a perfect way to combine heritage, nature and family time on the Opal Coast.
