Journées de la Rose at Chaalis Abbey

Journées de la Rose at Chaalis Abbey

When summer blooms in Northern France.

Every second weekend in June, deep within the peaceful woodland of Ermenonville Forest, an extraordinary transformation takes place. The historic Abbaye de Chaalis, founded in the 12th century, becomes the setting for one of Hauts-de-France’s most enchanting garden events: the Journées de la Rose.

For three days, the abbey and its grounds celebrate the world’s most romantic flower in all its forms. As gravel paths crunch beneath the feet of thousands of visitors, colour and fragrance fill the air, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and spectacular. With around 100 specialist exhibitors and nearly 20,000 visitors, this rose festival has earned its place among the finest horticultural events of the French summer.

A garden shaped by time, beauty and imagination

Beyond the abbey’s renowned art collections, the rose garden itself is a highlight. Carefully designed and lovingly maintained, it showcases what can be achieved when nature and craftsmanship work in harmony. Elegant pergolas, sculpted topiary, statues and flower-covered arches frame more than 100 varieties of roses, offering endless inspiration for garden lovers and dreamers alike.

It’s a place to linger, to observe details, and to enjoy the gentle rhythm of a garden at its peak.

Savouring the art de vivre in Chantilly

The Journées de la Rose are as much about sharing knowledge as they are about visual delight. Specialist nurseries and passionate growers present their finest plants, while experts are on hand to offer advice, ideas and insight. Whether you’re looking to transform a garden or simply bring home a touch of French elegance, you’ll find seeds, bulbs, rose bushes, ornamental features and beautifully crafted tools.

Workshops, exhibitions and talks punctuate the day, while pauses are encouraged — perhaps for tea and French pâtisserie at the refined outdoor tearoom. Every detail invites you to slow down and savour the moment.

A truly sensory celebration, where heritage, horticulture and simple pleasures come together in a timeless setting.
